Beyond the Boob: When Did Feeding a Baby Get This Complicated?

There’s a LOT of stuff that comes with feeding a baby

Pumps, bottles, flange sizes and all the baby-feeding gear you’re suddenly expected to understand.

You’re having a baby.

Apparently that means you need a breast pump. And a wearable pump. Maybe a manual pump?

A baby bottle box with six different bottles because… wait. Some breastfed babies refuse bottles?! Is that really a thing?

And apparently there’s an ideal time to introduce one?

Your pump came with a 24 mm flange, so obviously that must be your size.

Right?

Ehhhhhh.

There’s a long-running story in the lactation world that somewhere, sometime, some man looked at the standard flange used for dairy cows and thought, “Yep. That should work for women too.”

Is that historically verified? Nope.

After nearly three decades in women’s healthcare, am I ruling it out?

Also nope.

So now we need to figure out your flange size too?!

When did feeding a baby get this complicated?

This is exactly why we created Beyond the Boob: Pumps, Bottles & Everything In Between.

Can We Save You Some Money?

That is genuinely one of my goals with this class.

There is SO MUCH stuff marketed to new parents.

Pumps. Wearables. Bottles. Flanges. Milk collectors. Pumping bras. Pacifiers. Nipple shields. Freezer bags. Sterilizers. Bottle warmers.

And, of course, the Haakaa.

Do we love the Haakaa?

Do we hate the Haakaa?

Do you even need a Haakaa?

Come to class.

We’re going to talk about all of it — what you probably need, what you might need, what can wait and what you can skip altogether.

Because babies are expensive enough.

Let’s Talk Pumps

Primary pump or wearable?

Can a wearable be your only pump?

Does a more expensive pump mean it’s better?

And WHY did everyone get a 24 mm flange?!

We’ll make pumps and flange sizing make sense before you’re sitting at home postpartum wondering why pumping hurts.

And Bottles. Because Apparently That’s Complicated Too.

Which bottle?

Which nipple flow?

When should you introduce it?

What the heck is paced bottle feeding?

And yes, some breastfed babies absolutely refuse bottles.

We would much rather talk about that now than three days before you return to work when your baby has decided that every bottle in the house is unacceptable.

About That Freezer Stash…

You do not need enough frozen breastmilk to feed the neighborhood.

Promise.

We’ll talk about how much milk babies actually need, what a realistic stash looks like, milk storage and what pumping for work or time away from baby actually looks like.

Prepared is good. Turning your garage freezer into a breastmilk warehouse is not required.

Basically, We’re Clearing Up the Confusion

Beyond the Boob is the stuff I wish parents knew before they bought all the stuff.

We’re talking pumps, bottles, flange sizing, milk storage, bottle introduction, pumping, returning to work and all those breastfeeding gadgets everyone keeps telling you that you absolutely have to own.

We’ll tell you what we love.

We’ll tell you what we don’t.

And we’ll tell you when the answer is the very annoying but very accurate:

“It depends.”

Beyond the Boob pairs perfectly with our From Bump to Boob Prenatal Breastfeeding Class, but you don’t have to take that class first.

Bring your support person. Bring your questions.

And maybe leave a few things sitting in your Amazon cart until after class. 😉

We might just save you some money. 🧡
