Your Breastfeeding Roadmap — Every Stage Where an IBCLC Can Make a Difference
Here is something I want every pregnant mom to hear before her baby arrives.
Lactation support is not just for when something goes wrong.
The families who have the smoothest breastfeeding journeys are usually not the ones who waited until they were in tears at 2am to reach out. They are the ones who had a plan. Who knew what to expect at each stage. Who had someone in their corner before they ever needed to call for help.
That is what my team does. We walk alongside families from pregnancy all the way through weaning — and there is a natural place for us at every single milestone along the way.
Here is what that roadmap looks like.
Before Baby Arrives — The Prenatal Consult
Most people do not realize you can meet with an IBCLC before your baby is even born. And honestly this is one of the most valuable things you can do.
A prenatal breastfeeding consult is not just breastfeeding 101. We talk about how milk actually works, what the first days look like, what is normal and what is not, and how to set yourself up for the best possible start. We also offer a separate prenatal consult that goes beyond the breast — covering pumping, bottles, tools like nipple shields and supplemental nursing systems, and what actually belongs on your registry and what you can skip.
Coming in before your baby arrives means you are not learning everything for the first time when you are exhausted and engorged and wondering if you are doing it all wrong. You already know. You already have a plan.
Days One Through Five — The Newborn Consult
This is the most critical window of the entire breastfeeding journey.
What happens in the first few days sets the foundation for everything that comes after. My team offers newborn consults from day one through day five — in your home, at one of our office locations across the Phoenix Valley, or via telehealth.
We assess latch, milk transfer, weight, feeding cues, positioning, and how your body is responding. We look at the whole picture — baby and mom together. And we help you build the skills and the confidence you need to get feeding off to the strongest possible start.
If something feels off in those first days — trust that feeling and call us. Early support is always easier than course correcting later.
The First Few Weeks — As Often as You Need
There is no rule that says you only get one visit.
The first few weeks of breastfeeding are a moving target. Your milk is coming in, your baby is growing and changing, your body is recovering, and everything feels like it shifts overnight. Some families need us once. Some need us several times during this season. Both are completely normal.
We are here as often as you need us to get breastfeeding truly established and feeling sustainable.
Around Four Weeks — The Bottle Introduction Consult
Four weeks is the sweet spot for introducing a bottle to a breastfed baby — and it deserves its own visit.
Not because it is complicated, but because doing it well matters. The right timing, the right approach, the right bottle for your baby — these things make the difference between a baby who moves easily between breast and bottle and one who digs their heels in later. We cover flow rate, pacing, who offers the bottle and how, and how to protect your supply while you do it.
Before You Go Back to Work — The Return to Work Consult
Returning to work is one of the biggest transitions in a breastfeeding journey and it deserves a real plan — not just a list of tips from the internet.
We help you figure out how much milk your baby actually needs while you are apart, how to build a stash without overdoing it, how to talk to your employer about pumping breaks, what to expect from your output at the pump, and how to troubleshoot when things shift. This visit is ideally done a few weeks before your return date so you have time to practice and prepare.
When Feeding Changes — Developmental Milestones and Leaps
Breastfeeding does not stay the same as your baby grows. It shifts constantly.
Wonder weeks, developmental leaps, teething, distracted feeding, nursing strikes, changes in milk demand — all of it can feel like something is wrong when really it is just your baby growing. My team helps you read what is actually happening, protect your supply through the transitions, and keep the feeding relationship intact through every stage.
Starting Solids — The Six-Month Milestone Consult
Introducing solids is exciting and also a surprisingly common time for breastfeeding to quietly unravel — not because anything went wrong but because no one explained how the two work together.
We help you understand how to introduce food without tanking your supply, how to keep breast milk as the primary nutrition source through the first year, and how to navigate the shift as your baby's eating evolves.
Whenever You Are Ready — Weaning
Weaning looks different for every family. Some moms wean at six months. Some at two years. Some wean from the pump but not the breast. Some drop one feed at a time over months. There is no wrong way to do it and there is no judgment here — ever.
What there is: a process that goes more smoothly when you have support. We help you wean in a way that is gentle on your body, responsive to your baby, and completely on your own timeline.
